Varicose Veins
Varicose veins are swollen, twisted veins usually found in the legs, causing discomfort and aesthetic issues. Effective treatments are available to relieve symptoms and enhance appearance.
Radiofrequency ablation (VNUS Closure)
In suitable patients, this is a very effective technique for treating large varicose veins on a day-case basis. Admission to discharge usually takes about 3 hours. Under local anaesthetic a catheter (tube) is passed up the varicose vein, which is then sealed from the inside using gentle heat generated by microwaves.
Foam Sclerotherapy
This is an effective new treatment for varicose veins performed under local anaesthetic as an outpatient. It is particularly useful for varicose veins occurring in clumps or for varicose veins that have recurred after previous treatments. After anaesthetising the skin, a needle is inserted into the varicose vein under ultrasound control, and a foam is injected which causes the vein to become sticky and shrivel up over several weeks.
Endovenous Laser Therapy (EVLT)
This is a treatment for varicose veins, which is almost identical in technique to radiofrequency ablation (VNUS Closure). EVLT uses laser energy rather than microwave energy to close the vein. EVLT operates at a muchhigher temperature than VNUS closure, but is no more effective than VNUS closure, both techniques being highly effective.
In addition, EVLT, because it is using laser light, requires greater protection and safety measures during the procedure, and is associated with increased post-procedure pain and bruising compared to VNUS ablation.
For these reasons, Mr Higman’s preference is to use radiofrequency ablation (VNUS Closure) for varicose vein treatment.
Surgery
Varicose vein surgery may be recommended for a small number of patients who have particularly large or extensive varicose veins, and is a highly effective treatment in these cases. This treatment is performed under general anaesthetic, generally as a day case procedure
